Costers del Segre, Spain,13.5% ABV
$4 at the San Pablo, CA store
This wine is very much in the same vein (also literally) as the 2006 Raimat Tempranillo, which also appeared at the San Pablo store for the sale. It’s tasty from the start, but is a little reserved at first, finishing with slightly odd-tasting tannin. But after about 45 minutes of air in the bottle and a little more in the glass, it becomes darker and sweeter, with flavors of dark red and purple cherry, tangy cranberry sauce, medium-ripe blackberry, a little sweet black pepper or allspice, and something close to oil-cured black olive. Although the fruit is quite ripe and jammy, there is reasonable supporting acid of ripe red / black raspberry and tannic structure.
I think we’ll have a big burst of posts today, the last day of the Spring 2012 20% off sale, and then we’ll be a bit more subdued for a while.
