2003 Volpaia Balifico

Tuscany, Italy
13.5% alc.
$15 at Renton, WA (purchased 4/26/13)

20130428_190303_resized (2)This wine is the real thing. A super Tuscan blend of 65% Sangiovese and 35% Cabernet that smells and tastes Italian. Herbs, leather, spice, chocolate candy, and dark cherry/blackberry fruit (that is not prominent). Good complexity and great structure on the palate with fairly gritty tannins which I am reading was characteristic of the 2003 vintage. Most of the nose carries over to the palate with additions of licorice, mineral, earth, and tea. Nice length in the finish. My only knock was either a lack of fruit or the fruit was well hidden. I have a hunch that this wine will be much better after resting from transportation.

A big thumbs up for me. Where else can you find 10 year old Super Tuscan for $15 that you didn’t have to cellar? Wait another week for the sale and it is $12 if you want to take the chance. For what it is worth, RP gave it a 90 and any pricing I can find is $40-$50.
