$6 at 4th Ave Seattle (purchased 5/15/13)
I confess that it was the “reserve” on the label that sucked me into this wine. I know that designation doesn’t really mean anything, but I guess I was hoping. Looking through the archives, BW reviewed the 2009 Stonehead Carmenere way back in December 2011. He had a better experience with that wine.
Pretty dark in color with purple tones. The nose has a strong fermentation smell and lots of prune. Dark berry fruit and more prune on the palate gave way to a menthol note. It had decent structure but I was in the mood for a more classic cab and this didn’t deliver. I don’t think I would have identified this as a cabernet in a blind tasting. It held its structure and flavor over the next couple of days however. I give it a drinkable but not my style.
