2011 Montresor Pinot Grigio, Veneto, Italy $5.99

Silverdale, WA     12.5%    (Purchased on 6/3/13)

IMG_1045Brilliant pale golden; very pleasant bouquet of slightly green (underripe) pear, white peach, grapefruit pith and flintstone.  In the mouth, it’s very soft and smooth while showing decent acidity; bone dry, but lightly fruity with flavors of grapefruit and earthiness.  A rather austere wine that strikes me as the perfect wine for shellfish—either drinking it with fresh chilled oysters on the halfshell or as the cooking broth for steamed clams or mussels.  This is NOT your seriously fruity domestic Pinot Gris for sure.  A buck less would make it a better GO deal.

Hi Lim13. I was writing up my own review (bottle from the Richmond, CA, store on 2 Oct) when I noticed that you already had this one. I think your notes are better than mine:

Nice flavors of pear, lemon, green melon and grape, but very mildly flavored and not very structured. It got better after the bottle had been open for a while, and was even better the next day. The flavors came forward more and the wine developed a delicate balance and supple texture. It nearly made Thumbs Up, but I think it’ll stay in Drinkable.

And although it is a dollar less in CA, I nonetheless also thought that it’s being a dollar less would make it a better deal.
