2011 Ste Chapelle Special Harvest Riesling

Snake River Valley, ID; 10% ABV
$5 at the Richmond, CA, store on 18 Dec

After I brought this bottle home and looked it up, I found out I hadn’t been that enthusiastic about the 2010 bottling here.  In contrast, this vintage’s bottling is quite nice.

An enticing nose of yellow flowers, yellow and green apple, plus some citrus, leads to a lot more of the same on the palate: yellow pear, flowers, apple, and grapefruit, green apple, a little lemon, some ripe yellow grape skin.  It’s full-flavored and modestly complex and elegant, quite tasty.  To my taste, the ripe fruit and sugar could have been balanced with a little more acid and minerality, but the wine is not flabby, either.  On the second day, the rest of the wine in the fridge had simplified considerably, but was still pretty tasty.

BW, thanks for posting. I have seen this around the Bay Area recently and passed since I remembered your earlier review (and that if their late harvest ever shows back up, to buy it).

Thanks for the appreciation. Actually, when I went back to the bottle for a late-night sip, the wine was better again, but in a more honeyed dessert wine flavored kind of way, not fresh-fruity the way it had been.
