Domaine de la Vougeraie 2003 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru

Beaune, Burgundy, France; 12.5% ABV
$19 at the Berkeley, CA, store on 15 Nov

2003_Vougeraie_ClosDuRoiThis was initially similar to the 2003 Boisset Pommard in its ripe red cherry fruit, but also different in that it was more acid with a tinge of vinegar. Then, while it initially showed that red cherry fruit with dried orange peel bordering on cola, it aired over a couple hours to give flavors of dark cherry, plum, even blackberry and dark aromatic spice. So, while I probably wouldn’t buy more at this price, it was interesting, more intense and tasty than the Pommard, despite being slightly too old.

Not sure whether I agree more with BW (a little too old) or SB (insufficiently acidic, overripe) but this wine did not live up to the reputation of the vineyard (one of the tbetter Premier Crus of the Cote de Beaune). Not one I’d buy any more of.

This did not strike me as too old. It struck me as being more like an overripe, insufficiently-acidic California pinot than a Burgundy. Had it with dinner last night, glad I only bought one.
