Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC, Italy; 13% ABV
$3 at the San Leandro, CA, store on 2 Feb
My curiosity about Friulano and the low price combined to overwhelm my concern about this wine’s possibly being too old. It was a gamble worth taking.
The wine has an intensely fruity nose that I would characterize as “tropical fruit cocktail” (plus ripe yellow grapefruit), quite unlike any Italian wine I’ve previously tasted. There was plenty more of the same on the palate, with a ripeness that is tending toward oxidation, balanced by an oaky bitterness on the finish. This is very good for the price, but as with so many GO wines, don’t wait to drink it. It’s my observation that $3 wine sells out quickly whether or not it’s any good, so this may not be around any more, but it’s a good bet if you find it.
Update: The rest of the bottle in the fridge was still delicious the next day.
