Asprinio d’Aversa DOC, Italy; 12.5% ABV
$8 at the San Leandro, CA, store on 2 Feb
This was in the batch of Italian wines that arrived about a month ago, but I didn’t get it when I first saw it. However, it was still at the San Leandro store when I happened to be in the neighborhood.
The wine has some interesting flavors: light yellow melon / melon rind, lemon and a little lime, with fairly strong acid and decent minerality. (Power of suggestion would have me saying the acid + minerality = aspirin, but that is not quite right.) However, much of its character is simply “vinous” (tastes like wine), which I find rather dull. Perhaps one needs raw shellfish to go with this instead of herbed, pan-fried chicken breast, but I found it only Drinkable, and for the price, often pretty close to Thumbs Down.
