2011 Echelon Red Blend $4.99

Vinted & Bottled by Echelon Vineyards, Graton CA
ABV 13%
Purchased: Albany, OR 7-28-2014

FullSizeRender 2We purchased this wine back in July, but it is still on our local GO shelves. I’d put off drinking it because I couldn’t find any information about it online. I’d tasted it once when my husband opened a bottle but it was a fleeting sip, not enough for a real review. The 2010 is listed at the Echelon Website. If that blend is any indication (and I would say that taste does seem to confirm it) then this is its basic composition:

Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Other Reds
Vintage: 2010
Alcohol: 13%
pH: 3.54
Acidity: 3.5 g/L
Oak: Medium Toasted Oak
SRP:$13.99

I would guess that Zinfandel is one of the “Other Reds” listed in the blend. Perhaps a bit of Cabernet Franc.

I was surprised. This is not a bad little wine. Obviously with the SRP you can see it’s not “top shelf”, but it’s not bad at all. It’s a decently balanced, straightforward, moderately dry red blend. Medium mouthfeel. It pairs well with food. On the sale, it would be $4, and that is a good price for this wine. It’s better than drinkable but we’re not doing hand stands or ordering a case. It’s just a decent rend blend for a good price.

Compared to the FOUR Star wine that is still on the shelf for the same price, it’s not as good (to me). That one is richer, with some interesting layers as well as being slightly more spicy and a bit more fruit forward. On the other hand, this one would pair well with more meals, without overpowering them.

Overall, a decent table wine.
