Cascade Range 2012 Riesling

Rattlesnake Hills, WA; 12.1% ABV
$4 at the Oakland, CA, store on 16 March

CascadeRange_2012_RieslingThis off-dry Riesling shows flavors of yellow flowers, yellow apple, some lemon and a little green grape skin.  It’s on the riper side, but not too heavy, reasonably balanced by acid, and modestly complex and delineated.  It was well received at a dinner of Asian hot pot.  Solidly Drinkable.

drinking this one right now, chilly but not cold. wrong glass for the format but this is a GO wine site so let’s not pretend too much. glass two is not showing a lot of minerality but I am getting a nice fat juiciness rolling up after the finish. i have been chasing more mineral present wines at the GO recently and thankfully there have been a glut of white showing up on the shelves. this white is just fine. it drinks well, it drinks easily, it is food friendly and stands alone like stands with a fist in dancing with wolves. plus, 3.99? really? when did we become snobby?

Hi Chaddick and welcome! It sounds like you and I enjoyed many of the same aspects of this wine. Cheers!

This wine fell flat for me. I liked the bit of minerality and the off-dry tone was nice. However, I like to get punched with the cheaper, sweeter riesling grape flavor coming through in $5-10 grocery store wines and here it was extremely muted. I wouldn’t buy another bottle, or maybe I would, just to see if I happened to get one on the downward slope (hard to believe for a 2012).

Hi GOWL. I agree this wine will not “punch you in the face” with Riesling flavor. Myself, I saw this as a plus, as I can find all that flowery, fruity sweetness a bit over the top. To my taste, this wine was pleasantly balanced, maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, as it were.
